Drawing and painting came naturally to the artist as a child growing up in a creative family. Much of her childhood was spent exploring the woods and fields of Western Washington. Intrigue with the plants and animals in her surroundings began at a young age and grew into a lifelong fascination with the complexity and beauty of nature.
“Many people live busy lives in urban areas and have little connection with nature. It can be a nurturing, calming, and grounding energy that we don’t even realize we are missing. Taking time to be still, be in the moment, and watch what is happening around us is becoming a lost art. To observe a wild flower, an animal grazing, or just drink in the landscape is a pleasure too often overlooked. My work is meant to encourage people to stop for a minute and be aware of a slice of rural life. Having been raised around cattle, they are a natural vehicle for me to use in my work. They are often ignored and taken for granted. They contribute a great deal to our society. Frequently people tell me that my art work makes them feel nostalgic. I like the idea of triggering memories and helping others see animals in a new light.”
Currently living in rural Eastern Oregon, close to nature, provides Linda with abundant inspiration for her art work. Cows, wildflowers, even weeds present equal motivation to bring forth art. She strives to bring the commonplace into a sharper focus, inviting others to share her perspective. Her work is meant to serve as a point of reconnection, a remembering, pulling us back into a relationship with animals and nature.
The artist mainly paints in oils. Experimenting with other media over the years has always brought her back around to oils.
“Oil paints have a depth and subtlety that I can’t find in other media. The long drying time enables me to move the paint around and play with the possibilities."
Linda first brushes thin glazes of saturated color over the entire canvas. This layer of paint is allowed to dry before she proceeds. Heavier paint is applied and in places wiped back down to allow the glow of the bold underpainting to add life the work.
Linda Elliott has traveled throughout the Western United States exhibiting her work, winning numerous awards.
